ACDI/VOCA is a private non-profit organization implementing a USAID P.L. 480 Title II Food Security Program in Uganda. The USAID-funded program will reduce food insecurity and improve nutrition through better production and use of food by farmers, and the distribution of supplementary foods to vulnerable populations. We are looking for dynamic persons to fill in the positions below:
Post: Agronomists
Location: 1 Soroti 1 Kitgum (with frequent travel to the sub-counties)
Contract Period: 1 year
Reporting to the to the Northern Area Projects Manager, the successful candidates will be responsible for the following tasks among others;
• Train field extension workers (FEWs), particularly n improved agronomic practices but also in basic nutrition, hygiene, and farming as a business.
• Supervise and assist FEWs to train farmer groups, and in collection of yield data.
• Assist grantee organizations to meet and properly report performance objectives.
• Prepare activity reports on a quarterly basis.
• Encourage adoption of successful technolo¬gies by communities.
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications
•The applicants should have a degree in Crop Science/ Agronomy or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution. Advance agricultural and management related qualification would be a plus.
Experience
At least 3 years of working experience with a recognized organization in agronomy or crop science
Language
• The successful candidates should be able to fluently speak the local languages of the area; Acholi or Ateso. Ability to speak Kumam or Lugwere would be an added advantage.
Personal Skills
• Highly motivated and a good team player
• Well organized with good interpersonal skills
• Good communication and report writing skills
• Good initiative and a good sense of judgment
• Ability to manage and supervise technical staff
• Demonstrable ability to work under minimum supervision
