Centre for African Family Studies: Communications Intern

The Centre for African Family Studies is an African Institution dedicated to strengthening the capacities of organizations and individuals in the field of health, HIV & AIDS, population and development in order to contribute to improving the quality of life of families in sub-Saharan Africa.

CAFS Training and Technical Assistance Team (TTA) made up of highly qualified professionals on Advocacy, Reproductive Health, HIV&AIDS, Organizational Development, and Knowledge Management (KM), conducts courses and provides research and consultancy services from bases in Lome, Togo, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and Nairobi Kenya.

Position Description and Required Tasks
The position of Communications Intern will be part of CAFSTTA Team, which is under the supervision the Team Leader (TL)/TTA. The purpose of this internship is to produce the 2010 CAFS Annual Report and the April 2010 issue of CAFS News. On the one hand, the internship will provide the Intern with an opportunity to gather professional experience in the areas of communication, and gain knowledge in Reproductive Health/ HIV&AIDS. On the other, CAFS will benefit from the Intern’s technical and, to a lesser extent, administrative support to the production of the two CAFS publications, and to the content management of CAFS website and social media pages.

Responsibilities:
* Expand and revamp CAFS Communications Strategy
* Create a work plan that follows the activities present in the Communications Strategy
* Organize and coordinate the production of CAFS 2010 Annual Report; including summarizing reports, collecting photos, gathering content from technical staff, and liaising with the publishing company.
* Organize and coordinate the production of CAFS Fall 2010 newsletter (CAFS News)
* Translate website and newsletter content from English to French.
* Write, edit and update CAFS and TSF websites’ content as directed by the Knowledge Management Specialist and the TSF Team Leader.
* Update CAFS social media pages, including Facebook, Reliefweb, Idealist, tsfeasternafrica.org, and CAFS.org.
* Evaluate website performance using Google Analytics and make recommendations.
* Assist with public relations and communication with CAFS client groups as directed,
* Assist with correspondence and general office tasks as they arise.

Key Outputs:
* Finalized (print-ready version) of CAFS 2009 Annual Report
* Finalized materials/manuscripts for April 2010 issue of CAFS News.
* Approved content (new and updated) for CAFS Website and Social Media

Required Knowledge and Skills:
* College or graduate student with a degree in communications, journalism, English (or any other relevant field) with knowledge of reproductive health and HIV&AIDS.
* Excellent writing and editing skills.
* Excellent communications skills.
* Ability to plan tasks and meet deadlines.
* Willingness to take initiative and motivation to seek new learning opportunities

Language
High proficiency in spoken and written English and French.
