Adept Systems: Trade Assistant - Jobs and Vacancies in Kenya

Reporting to : Trader and no direct reports
Location : Nairobi
Job Summary
Our client is a rapidly expanding multinational agricultural trading company with the country office headquartered in Mombasa. The Trade Assistant’s position contributes to the success of the East African coffee platform by supporting all trade functions and acting as a liaison between the Nairobi trading desk; the Mombasa administrative centre and the Geneva trading head office.

Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions
1. Provides overall & general support to the trading desk
2. Fields calls and follow-up with suppliers and clients in regards to sample requests and shipping instructions
3. Compiles and maintains purchases and sales records
4. Maintains daily communication, organizes logistical services, assists with preparation of coffee trading budgets
5. Is the liaison between the Nairobi Trading Desk and the Mombasa Accounting Desk & Geneva Head office.
6. Is in charge of compiling and producing all trading desk reports as required by the traders
7. Gathers news, statistics and information related to individual commodity supply and demand from customers and trade sources, and distributes that information to the remainder of the group to support overall strategic trading/positioning (i.e., contributes to research function)
8. Attends/Participates in the auction when the Trader is not available
9. Attends all in-country industry meetings as a stand-in for the Trader Company Conformance Statements

Education/Professional Certifications/Licenses and experience
· Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in business, economics, finance, mathematics, or, agribusiness or a related discipline
· Three years in one or more of the following:
o Commodity Merchandising/Origination/Trading
o Commodity Risk Management
o Treasury department in a bank
o Trader in the stock exchange
o Shipping or logistics company
· Good understanding of Arabica and/or Robusta Coffee Trade and origination will be an advantage

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (including any physical demands)
· Previous trading/sensory experience in coffee/tea/wine/spices or similar commodities is an advantage
· Proficiency with MS Word, Excel & PowerPoint Presentations
· Strong verbal and written communication skills
· Good knowledge of futures markets, hedging and arbitrage is an advantage
· Strong quantitative skills, including basic knowledge of statistics and probability concepts (e.g.,supply and demand relationships, analysis of price relationships)
· Ability to manage and process large amounts of data
· Ability to organize multiple responsibilities, prioritize workload and perform multiple tasks simultaneously
· Is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and results orientated
· Shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges
· Ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment
· Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals; Solicits input by genuinely valuing others’ ideas and expertise;
· Foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning
· Ability to work with minimal supervision
· Decision Making/Accountability
· Exercises judgment, within established parameters, to arrive at appropriate decisions and actions for the purpose of adding value to the firm.

Scope
· Fast-paced, trading floor environment
· Interacts closely with personnel in other departments and company locations
· Interacts closely with middle and senior management
· Extended hours (50-60 hours per week) as needed to complete time sensitive projects or
respond to emergencies
