Adept Systems: Coffee Trader - Jobs in Kenya

Reporting to : Regional Manager East Africa – Coffee
Location : Nairobi
Job Summary
Our client has been one of the leading merchandisers and traders in international agricultural commodity
markets since 1851 and has offices in over 50 countries all over the world.

They are looking to hire a coffee trader in their Nairobi office to contribute to the overall success of the East African coffee platform. This will be through origination strategies that maximize the profitability of the platform through onward sales to an international customer base.

Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
1. Negotiates purchases in origin and sales contracts to international buyers of African Arabica and Robusta coffees.
2. Manages counter party risk through supplier and purchaser vetting and contractual risk through the use of
futures instruments (including hedging).
3. Follows; adheres and executes to the platform market strategy.
4. Responsible for managing & developing supplier and buyer relationships as applicable.
5. Responsible for quality management through analysis & liquoring.
6. Where country applicable, attends and participates in the weekly coffee auctions
7. Maintains daily communication, organizes logistical services, assists with preparation of coffee trading
budgets
8. Identifies, qualifies and captures new business opportunities.
9. Reports daily trading position as required by the organization.
10. Upholds corporate risk management standards through the use of Coffee futures contracts, spread
management, and commodity position tracking.
11. Manage receivables; facilitate innovative methods to keep accounts receivable and average number of
days to pay at a minimum.
12. Develop and market exchange-based and over-the-counter financial hedges to manage price and
volumetric risk
13. Identifies all risks, threats and opportunities in-country
14. Gathers news, statistics and information related to individual commodity supply and demand from
customers and trade sources, and distributes that information to the remainder of the group to support
overall strategic trading/positioning (i.e., contributes to research function)
15. Attends all in-country industry meetings
16. Promotes & develops the client’s name and brand while in-country and through travel.

Education/Professional Certifications/Licenses and experience:
· Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in business, economics, finance, mathematics, food science and technology,
agribusiness or a related discipline and/or Proven Trading Experience
· Five years in one or more of the following:
· Commodity Merchandising/Origination/Trading
· Commodity Risk Management
· Good understanding of Arabica and/or Robusta Coffee Trade and origination.
· Manages Nairobi trading assistant & in country teams

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (including any physical demands):
· Previous experience in coffee or similar soft commodities
· Proficiency with MS Word, Excel & PowerPoint Presentations
· Strong verbal and written communication skills
· Knowledge of relevant accounting concepts and practices.
· Basic knowledge of regression and correlation analysis
· Good knowledge of futures markets, hedging and arbitrage
· Strong quantitative skills, including basic knowledge of statistics and probability concepts (e.g., supply and
demand relationships, analysis of price relationships)
· Ability to manage and process large amounts of data
· Ability to organize multiple responsibilities, prioritize workload and perform multiple tasks simultaneously
· Is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results
· Shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges
· Ability to work with minimal supervision
· Ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment
· Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals; Solicits input by genuinely valuing
others’ ideas and expertise;
· Foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning
· Processes a variety of information and data to devise and execute trading strategies. Negotiates with
trade counterparts to maximize corporate returns. Advises and recommends trading strategies assesses
risk pertaining to buying and selling in the coffee market and negotiates contract terms with clients.

Scope:
· Fast-paced, trading floor environment
· Interacts closely with personnel in other departments and company locations
· Interacts closely with middle and senior management
· Extended hours (50-60 hours per week) as needed to complete time sensitive projects or respond to
emergencies
· Travel required
