Internews network: Web Application Developer

Internews network, www.internews.org, is an international not-for-profit media development organization that works to improve access to information for people around the world, by fostering independent media and promoting open communications policies in the public interests.

Internews programs are built on the conviction that providing people with access to vibrant, diverse news and information empowers them to participate effectively in their communities and make their voices heard.

Job Summary: The Web Application Developer will be responsible creating a national website as well as integrate new media and crowd sourcing platforms as Ushahidi.

The ideal candidate must display excellent PHP coding knowledge and web design skills, as well as written and oral skills with demonstrated interpersonal and organization abilities. A candidate for this position must be able to work in a varied, fast paced environment. Flexibility and tolerance is a necessity.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Design and maintain a national information Website for Internews Kenya as per programs needs
• Integrate new medias such as Twitter, Facebook and You Tube in the website
• Develop new Web applications as identified by supervisor and management
• Identify system deficiencies and provide timely solutions.
• Code and maintain the Ushahidi platform according to Internews needs.
• Design and implement user-driven templates, databases and interfaces for ease of use.
Intergrate the Ushahidi platform with the Internews Website
• Develop database-driven Web interfaces for rapid, real-time information sharing.
• Research and generate additional content in different format (video, audio, blog) for the site on a daily basis
• Edit and overview website content submitted by Internews staff and participating journalists Skills and

Competencies:
PHP developing skills and familiarity with CSS and HTML
• Demonstrate proficiency in Open Source and Mapping Software (Open Street Map and Google Map)
• Possesses demonstrated work experience with Ushahidi or similar platforms
• Possess knowledge of citizen Journalism and crowd sourcing tools

• Possess strong writing and editorial skills
• Proficient in Internet related applications such as E-Mail clients, FTP clients and Web Browsers.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and/or Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, MIS, or related experience.
• Journalism Degree/Diploma

• Must possess superior skills in ColdFusion 7 +, SQL, Object Oriented ColdFusion Development, Microsoft SQL Server 2005.
• Experience in structured environment with increasing levels of responsibility and complexity.
• Previous experience in a nonprofit /Media industry a plus.
• Flash video/animation experience a plus.
