icipe: icipe

icipe has approximately 350 staff to support its research and capacity building programmes, located at various sites in Kenya and Ethiopia.

icipe requires the services of a Laboratory Technician to work in the McKnight Foundation-funded Napier Grass Stunt Disease Project. This position is based at icipe Thomas Odhiambo campus (ITOC) in Mbita, South Nyanza.

The successful applicant will report to the Programme Coordinator.

Responsibilities:
* Conducting day-to-day laboratory activities which entail preparation and storage of reagents, and laboratory cleaning and waste disposal.
* Providing laboratory support to students and visiting scientists.
* Data collection and coding in both electronic and hard copy formats.
* Report writing and updating the supervisor regularly.
* Keeping an inventory of laboratory materials and initiating replacements as required.
* Perform other duties as may be required.

Requirements:
* Minimum Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or equivalent.
* Minimum 1 years’ experience conducting laboratory procedures, particularly in preparation of laboratory reagents, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), agarose gel electrophoresis and laboratory waste management.
* Experience with techniques in DNA sequencing, DNA sequence analysis and AFLP genotyping an added advantage.
* Must be computer literate and have good report writing skills.
* Must possess good organisational skills.
* Must have good communication and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to work in a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment is essential.
