* The editors work from 7 AM to 3 PM, daily including shifting weekends, and with two days off each week.

Sudan Radio Service: News Programming Adviser

Education Development Center (EDC) is one of the world’s leading nonprofit research and development firms. EDC is committed to Diversity in the Workplace.

EDC operates the Sudan Radio Service (SRS), which broadcasts objective news and information to Sudan and to Darfur, through its Darfur News and Information Service (DNIS).

The News Programming Adviser is responsible for partnering successfully with Chief of Party, Principal International Technical Adviser, home office project director and with Business Services, expatriate and local staff.

The News Programming Adviser will advise the DNIS news team and the DNIS and SRS drama teams, including:

* Assisting the COP and other staff in developing an overall vision and direction for DNIS;
* Advising the DNIS news team, particularly the DNIS news team coordinator;
* In collaboration with Principal International Technical Adviser and the DNIS Coordinator, ensuring that DNIS news meets SRS editorial standards;
* Assisting the DNIS team in planning documentary programs, and ensuring that the programs meet SRS editorial and technical standards;
* Developing and enforcing editorial practices that promote fair, accurate reporting on any and all nationally-important events and issues that impact Sudanese and South Sudanese citizens;
* Ensuring that news coverage planning is detailed, timely, and proactive;
* Mentoring and training of the DNIS news team on investigative techniques, writing, etc;
* Expanding DNIS news and current events program offerings;
* Advising on and/or editing daily DNIS news stories for broadcast and publication on the SRS website;
* Striving to maintain SRS as the leading independent broadcast news outlet in Sudan and South Sudan;
* Increasing the reach of Sudan Radio Service programming by strengthening existing partnerships with local broadcasters and developing new partnerships with other news outlets;
* Managing new media initiatives which promote and disseminate SRS news coverage (website, SMS, electronic newsletters);
* Performing other duties, as assigned.

The News Programming Adviser will be based in Nairobi, Kenya, but will travel to Sudan, and, if necessary, to Chad and other locations where Darfur refugees are located.

Qualifications:

This position requires educational achievement; excellent writing skills; demonstrable initiative, creativity, and flexibility; ability to work independently and effectively in groups; and strong interpersonal & organizational skills.

Specific requirements:

* Master’s degree or above, or equivalent combination of training & education
* With Master’s degree, 5–8 years related experience, including a minimum of 5 years technical project management or program development experience
* Specific technical expertise relevant to the projects, programs and operations
* Outstanding leadership skills
* Excellent analytical skills and aptitude for details
* Capacity to work in difficult conditions and function well under pressure
* Proficiency in English required; proficiency in Arabic and local Darfur languages preferred
* International experience required; experience in a developing country essential
* Solid background in radio journalism

CIMMYT: Science Writer/Editor

CIMMYT is an internationally funded, non-profit research and training organization affiliated with the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). The center works to sustainably increase the productivity of maize and wheat farming systems, thus helping to ensure global food security and to reduce poverty.

Its partners include national agricultural research systems, non-governmental organizations, and advanced research institutions, both public and private, in globally-focused projects and programs. CIMMYT employs about 600 permanent staff and operates through decentralized partnerships, with offices in 13 developing countries and projects and networks in many more.

In Kenya, CIMMYT is hosted by the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) in Nairobi.

The Position:

CIMMYT seeks a talented, dedicated Science Writer/Editor to help reach external audiences with pertinent technical and general information about its research maize, wheat, socioeconomics, and conservation agriculture, with special focus on sub-Saharan Africa.

The Science Writer/Editor will be based at CIMMYT’s office in Nairobi, Kenya.

Responsibilities:

The Science Writer/Editor will edit technical scientific publications, grant proposals, and other technical information; and write and edit non-technical material intended to increase public awareness of CIMMYT’s activities, as required.

The specific responsibilities include:

* Help develop diverse communications products, including the corporate annual report, project brochures, funding proposals, policy briefs, technical bulletins, scientific books and chapters, journal- and magazine articles, and varied content for web pages.
* Edit scientific articles, technical reports, and other documents for accuracy, clarity, style, and usage.
* Identify high interest stories throughout the Centre’s research programs and write and/or edit stories in a range of styles for dissemination in suitable formats and to various target audiences.
* Participate in communications planning and strategy development.
* Support and guide media outreach.
* Support and guide extension communications.
* As required, travel to document CIMMYT’s work on the ground, including field visits and taking still and video photography.
* Assist scientists in preparing scientific posters, presentations, and other materials.
* Select and provide photographs for use in publications and presentations.
* Assist in preparing presentations for scientific conferences and meetings.

Qualifications and Experience:

* Minimum a BA or BSc in communications, journalism, literature, science, agriculture or any other relevant field, and preferably 4-5 years of work experience relating to the position.
* Strong, proven skills in English writing and grammar.
* Fluency in English and Kiswahili; working knowledge of French and/or Spanish desirable.
* A capacity to understand processes and issues related to science and technology; with a focus on issues affecting agriculture and development in sub-Saharan Africa.
* Ability to write/edit under pressure, with high accuracy and to deadline.
* Creativity, particularly in devising new approaches to publications content.
* Ability to work in a team of professionals from many countries and cultures.
* Willingness to travel within the region and, occasionally, internationally.

The Editor/proof-reader
The Editor/proof-reader must:

1. Be fluent in written and spoken English
2. Have experience in editing/proofreading and in particular on economic policy issues

1. Review copy for grammar, spelling and punctuation errors, word choice and formatting for consistency throughout the publication

Position: Finance Manager
This is a position that requires a committed, versatile and innovative team player

QUALIFICATION, EXPERIENCE AND PROFILE:
i, B. Com or BBA (Accounting option) or equivalent
ii. Full Professional Accounting qualifications i.e. ACCA, CPA or equivalent
iii,Should be conversant with at least two Accounting packages and knowledge of QuickBooks shall be an added advantage,
iv. At least Five years in financial management position preferably with an NGO/CSO
v. Should have extensive knowledge of Donor Reporting requirements and management of donor funds
vi. Knowledge of international accounting standards and practices.

SPECIFIC TASKS AND AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Position: Kiswahili and Somali Translator (Part time)

FilmAid International is a non-governmental organization that uses film to promote health, strengthen communities and enrich the lives of the world’s vulnerable and uprooted. FilmAid is currently implementing programmes in Kakuma and Dadaab refugee camps in Kenya.

Responsibilities:
  • Translate scripts from English to Kiswahili and Somali
  • Work closely with the production consultant and voice actors to produce voice-overs in Swahili and Somali
  • Work with a video editor and production consultant to ensure that translations are represented correctly in videos through subtitles and voice over dubbing
  • Translate a video facilitation manual from English into Kiswahili and Somali
Requirements:
  • Knowledge of Somali and Swahili language
  • Previous experience in translation of written material
  • Ready to work with minimal supervision with ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Media Officer

To provide technical guidance and communication support for planning and delivery of youth behavior-change-communication through mass media campaign interventions for the local organization, HIV-Free Generation. Programmatic working experience with youth is required.

Web Designer & ICT Officer

Looking for a young designer with experience in graphic design and website hosting, as well as innovative communication technologies. This person will be responsible for maintaining content and design of a hip, attractive youth website with regular updates, as well as promoting this website.
